Modern lightning protection has three main lines of defense:

First of all, external protection, most of the lightning current is directly introduced into the underground to dissipate;

Secondly, internal protection, that is, blocking the equipment along the power line, data line, and signal line from intruding waves;

Third, over-voltage protection, to limit the lightning over-voltage amplitude on the protected equipment.
These three lines of defense cooperate with each other, each performing its duties, and one is indispensable.
